The movie opens with a debate whether Paris is beautiful in rain or not.
Gil keeps persuading his girlfriend Inez that its so romantic to settle down in Paris and write his novel. There's no debate in our minds when the first frame blooms out. The landscape of the city glows up in a hue. It looks both spring and overcast. The lights dim into the dark sky and the rain reflects the city lights, its a poetry of lights, rain, sky and the lonesome mind of the aspiring novelist.

This movie magically spins several time periods all along - 1920s, 1890s, Renaissance and present day. That's the beauty of this Woody Allen's masterclass movie.
After enjoying success as Hollywood screen writer, Gil wants to write a novel about a Nostalgia Store, as he discards film writing is not cherishing his artistic skills. In this process he pretty much gets lost in the streets of this lovely city and finds himself living in his greatest dreams. The 1920s. There is a glimpse of Picasso painting his first modern interpretation of Adriana, and you see Fitzgerald and Hemingway commenting on the art piece. Gil moves progressively into the subject and talks to Adriana to understand her reactions to the art-form of Picasso. Can you believe all these happening in Paris, and you are just like the wandering soul of Gil.
Every midnight Gil takes a mystery cab to 1920s and explores the lives of artists and writers of that time. In daylight the beautiful city glows with its multi-reflection of lotus ponds, medieval bridges and cloudy sky. We still have Paul giving lectures about modern day sculptures and impressionist art of Monet in the present day Paris, when Gil just walks around the city in the perfect lost-hood.
Adriana drifts away to 1890s Golden Era and Inez drifts away from Gil, leaving Gil enjoying his 1920s and settling up in present day Paris with Gabrielle. There is love, art, impressionism, naive imagination and this beautiful city.
